Round Mountain Trip Report

On Saturday, May 21, 2022, the club made their monthly SOTA trip to Round Mountain southwest of Greeneville, Tennessee. The summit designator is W4T/SU-029 and is located near the town of Del Rio, Tennessee. Attending were Justin, KO4DCD, Rick KD4AKW, and Ron, NR3E, and Tucson the SOTA dog. After meeting for breakfast at Perkins Restaurant in Kingsport, the group drove to the summit parking area. The last mile of the drive was over a very rough, poorly maintained forest road that required a four wheel drive truck. The hike to the summit was about a mile and a half up the trail with an elevation gain of just over 800 feet. At the top was a single tower site with one antenna that was most likely used by the forest service.

Justin set up an end fed antenna and used his Yaesu FT-817. He made 17 contacts on SSB. Rick threw a Slim Jim up a tree and used his handi talkie for two meters. But due to a connector issue, he at first had trouble making contacts. Once he replaced the connector, the contacts started pouring in and he quickly made seven. Ron used an end fed and an Elecraft KX2. He made 20 contacts, four SSB, and the rest CW with one to France.

The three hiked off the mountain without incident with rain threatening the whole time. As soon as they got back to the truck and got everything thrown in the back
