The April 23rd SOTA activation was to W4T/RV-002, an unnamed summit designated as 3940 and located off of McQueen Gap about half way between Shady Valley, TN and Damascus, VA. Taking part were Justin, KO4DCD, Brody, N4MKO, Rick, KO4WFI, Patrick, NE2P, and Ron, NR3E. After the half mile hike up the Appalachian Trail to the summit, we were set up and on the air by 1700 UTC. There was plenty of room on the summit for antennas and to spread out.
Justin made 12 contacts, 2 by two meter FM, two by SSB, and the rest by CW. This was his first CW activation and he handled himself quite well. Also, he got the only DX of the day which was to France. Brody made five contacts on two meter FM using the tape measure beam he made at the recent club antenna building session. Rick also made five contacts as well on two meter FM, using an Arrow brand three element hand held beam. Patrick, having activated the summit earlier in the year, concentrated on summit to summit contacts, making about twelve. Ron, who also had activated this summit earlier in the year acted as coach and advisor and did not make any contacts.
